A PLACE TO PLAY
The Utah Lake Restoration Project will transform Utah Lake into a world-class recreational destination with opportunities for boating and fishing, as well as lakefront activities such as camping, picnicking, and birdwatching.
BUILDING FOR THE FUTURE
Utah Lake is underutilized as a place of recreation despite it being so close to 2.5 million residents along the Wasatch Front. Our restoration efforts will not only return the lake to a more natural state, but will also provide more recreation opportunities in and around the lake.
We plan to create a destination for Utahns and visitors alike to enjoy for generations to come by creating:
A WATERSPORT-FRIENDLY ENVIRONMENT
The project will restore water quality and improve clarity, while addressing algal blooms, high sediment levels, and other sources of water degradation. Restoring water quality and controlling wind and wave action will create much better conditions for watersports, fishing, and sailing.

RECREATION ISLANDS
These publicly accessible islands will offer free and low-cost opportunities to play, explore, and camp. The topography of the islands will support a variety of activities such as hiking, biking, bouldering, and camping. These islands will feature sand and gravel beaches along the shoreline and docks for easy public access.
Open Space
Community and recreation islands will provide significant open space and recreational opportunities. Community islands will create environmentally friendly communities surrounded by trails, parks, waterways, beaches, and watersport opportunities. They will also include areas for business, shopping, entertainment, and sports.
Much of the land created will be for public benefit including lake access, parks, trails, wildlife sanctuary, beaches and open space. This will provide an amazing quality of life, excellent recreational opportunities, and significant additional habitat for waterfowl and wildlife.
170-MILE TRAIL SYSTEM
The project will provide more than 170 miles of interconnected, public-use trails on and around Utah Lake. This will provide unique recreational, exercise, and nature-viewing venues in addition to supporting runners, cyclists, and outdoor enthusiasts.
- Frequent rest areas will provide water, shade, native landscaping, seating, and restroom facilities along the trail system.
- Wetlands and conservation areas will include elevated trail access on piers to protect native landscapes.

BEACHES
The project will include the creation of sand and gravel beaches, depending on local needs and conservation design. They will be accessible by short trails from adjacent areas, parking lots, and access roads and will include direct access to the new lake trail system.
- Beaches will extend from riparian areas into the water. These beaches will be sloped so that drought and low water won’t affect usability.
- Sand beaches will use a specific mixture of graded, manufactured resort-rated sand, designed to be soft and comfortable to enjoy.
